Abelardo Avellaneda-Delgado

Abelardo Avellaneda-Delgado was a 68 year old Grandfather and Mexican citizen who had lived most of the last 40 years of his life in the US. His family described him as a devoted father with an unwavering work ethic and a deep love for his family.

Between the years of 2005 and 2021 Abelardo was arrested several times for a variety of low level offenses ranging from drug possession to domestic violence. On April 9, 2025 the Echols County Sheriff’s Office in Statenville, GA Arrested Abelardo on a probation violation and detained him at Lowndes County Jail, in Valdosta, GA. On April 10, 2025, ICE approached him and lodged an immigration detainer, It was at this time that arrangements were made for his transfer to Stewart Detention Center, in Lumpkin, GA.

His son (Junior) says that they had tried many times to visit him while he was detained and stated that authorities repeatedly denied them the opportunity. When they finally were granted visitation, they were startled by the condition that Abelardo was in. He was unable to speak with them or hold a phone to his ear. and wouldn’t make eye contact with them. When Junior asked about his father’s condition, staff informed him that Abelardo had been given medication, which was likely the reason for his disorientation.

On May 5th 2025, Abelardo became unresponsive while enroute to Stewart Detention Center and TransCor contract security called 911. Abelardo did not have a pulse and was not breathing when EMS arrived and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Very little information about the events leading up to Abelardo’s death is publicly available, although there is some documentation that suggests that he had dangerously high blood pressure reading that was ignored at the time of his transfer.

At the time of writing this, his death is under investigation.
